One Day in Pokhara: A Perfect Itinerary

A perfect one-day Pokhara plan: Sarangkot sunrise, Phewa Lake, the Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls and Lakeside.

A perfect one day in Pokhara runs from a Sarangkot sunrise to a Lakeside dinner, taking in the lake, a hilltop stupa and a dramatic waterfall in between. It is a full day, so start before dawn while the mountains are clearest, then work downhill and inward as the light softens. Here is an order that flows well and keeps the driving short.

Sunrise at Sarangkot

Begin in the dark with the drive up to Sarangkot for sunrise over the Annapurna range and the fishtail Machhapuchhre. The peaks catch first light above a mist-filled valley, and the air is at its clearest. Doing this first is essential — the mountains often vanish behind cloud by late morning, so the high viewpoint must come before everything else.

Morning on Phewa Lake

Back in town for breakfast, head to Phewa Lakeside and take a wooden boat out onto the water. Stop at the island Tal Barahi temple, one of Pokhara's most-loved shrines, then paddle on toward the southern shore. The morning lake is calm and the reflections superb — see our best photo spots in Pokhara guide for where to shoot.

Midday: caves and falls

From the lake's south side, visit the thundering Davis Falls, where the Pardi Khola disappears into a gorge, and cross the road to the underground Gupteshwor Mahadev cave, a sacred limestone cavern with a Shiva shrine. The two pair naturally and break up the day with something different. Grab lunch nearby before the afternoon.

Afternoon at the Peace Pagoda

Spend late afternoon climbing to the World Peace Pagoda on the southern ridge, reached by a forest trail up from the lake or by road. The white stupa glows in the lowering sun and the terrace gives a sweeping view back over the lake to the city and the Himalaya.

Evening on Lakeside

Return to Lakeside for the evening. Walk the promenade as the floodlit island temple lights up, then settle in for a lakefront dinner and live music — our things to do in Pokhara at night guide covers the after-dark scene. If you have more time on the trip, the full Pokhara itinerary extends this into several days. Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Pokhara?+

One day lets you hit Pokhara's headline sights — a Sarangkot sunrise, Phewa Lake, the World Peace Pagoda and Davis Falls — but it is a full, fast day. Two or three days is more relaxed and leaves room for a boat trip, a day hike or paragliding. If you only have a day, start before dawn to make it count.

What should you do first on a one-day Pokhara visit?+

Start with sunrise at Sarangkot, the ridge above the city, for the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre panorama in the day's clearest light. Mountains often cloud over by late morning, so doing the high viewpoint first protects the best views before turning to the lake and the lower sights.

How do you get around Pokhara in a day?+

Taxis are the simplest way to link Sarangkot, the lake, the Peace Pagoda and Davis Falls in a single day, and many visitors hire one for the morning. Lakeside itself is walkable, and a short boat across Phewa Lake is part of the fun. A rented scooter is a flexible alternative for confident riders.

Can you fit the Peace Pagoda into one day?+

Yes. The World Peace Pagoda fits neatly into a one-day plan, reached by a short boat across Phewa Lake and a forest climb, or by road. Visiting it in the late afternoon gives warm light on the white stupa and a fine farewell view over the lake before you head back for a Lakeside dinner.
