Hattiban to Champadevi Ridge Hike
A half-day forest ridge walk from Hattiban up to the 2,278 m Champadevi summit shrine above the valley.
The Hattiban to Champadevi ridge hike is the classic way up the southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley: a half-day forest walk from the wooded Hattiban hillside above Pharping to the prayer-flag summit of Champadevi (2,278 m). It packs pine and rhododendron forest, a hilltop shrine and — on a clear morning — a Himalayan horizon into a 3 to 4 hour round trip from the city's edge.
The route
From the Hattiban area the trail climbs steadily through forest along the ridge, gaining about 600 metres. The path is well used and easy to follow, with a few steep, rooty pitches near the top. The summit is small and atmospheric: a cluster of prayer flags, a modest Champadevi shrine and a clearing that opens to the south and north. Most walkers return the same way, though it is possible to descend the far side toward Dollu for a point-to-point day.
What you'll see
On a clear autumn or winter morning the summit gives a sweeping view over the southern valley and a line of the Himalaya — Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Dorje Lakpa among them. The forest itself is a draw: birdsong, pine scent and rhododendron colour in spring. Champadevi is a minor pilgrimage point as well as a viewpoint, so you may share the trail with local walkers and the occasional shrine offering.
Good to know
- Distance & time: Roughly 3–4 hours round trip from Hattiban; longer from a lower start on the Pharping road.
- Difficulty: Moderate — steady uphill, no exposure.
- Season: October–April for dry trail and views; autumn is best. Skip the monsoon when the forest gets slick.
- Water & food: Carry your own; there are no reliable shops on the ridge.
Getting there
The trailhead is at Hattiban, near Pharping, about 45–60 minutes south of central Kathmandu by taxi. Agree a return fare or have the driver wait. This is the same hillside as the Hattiban climbing crag, so climbers and hikers often share the road in.
Champadevi is one of seven walks in our guide to western and southern valley rim hikes, and a highlight of the wider day hikes near Kathmandu. For a gentler approach, see the Dollu to Champadevi route, or thread the lower forest from Pharping to Hattiban first.
