Western & Southern Valley Rim Hikes

Champadevi, Chandragiri, Hattiban and Pharping ridge walks on the western and southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley.

If you want hills, forest and a Himalayan horizon without leaving the Kathmandu Valley, head for its western and southern rim — the ridges that rise behind Pharping, Kirtipur and Chandragiri. The standout summits are Champadevi (2,278 m) and Chandragiri (2,550 m), linked by a web of old forest trails, shrines and pilgrim paths that make some of the best day hikes near the city. This cluster gathers seven of those walks, from gentle ridge strolls to longer crossings into the next valley.

The short answer

For the most scenic half-day, climb Champadevi — reach it from Hattiban along the ridge or from the quieter Dollu trailhead. For a satisfying point-to-point crossing, the Chandragiri to Chitlang descent drops off the rim into a green Newari valley on the old salt-trade road. Want to earn the Chandragiri summit on foot rather than ride the cable car? Walk up from Macchegaun or from the historic town of Kirtipur.

Tap any hike below for the route, timing, difficulty and how to get to the trailhead.

Western rim: Chandragiri and the cable car ridge

The western edge of the valley is anchored by Chandragiri Hills, where a cable car climbs from Thankot to a 2,550 m hilltop crowned by the Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple. Walkers reach the same ridge on foot from several directions: the forested climb from Macchegaun, the longer history-rich route from Kirtipur, and the classic crossing down the far side from Chandragiri to Chitlang. From the top, the whole Kathmandu Valley spreads below, with Langtang, Ganesh Himal and — on the clearest mornings — a glimpse of Everest on the skyline.

Southern rim: Champadevi, Pharping and Hattiban

South of the valley, the Pharping–Hattiban area is a tangle of monasteries, climbing crags and pilgrim trails leading up to Champadevi. The classic line is the Hattiban to Champadevi ridge, passing pine forest and prayer flags to the summit shrine. Approach it gently from Dollu on the Pharping road, or thread the lower forest from Pharping up to Hattiban, the same hillside as the Hattiban climbing crag. Further east, the Bhardeu to Lakuri Bhanjyang walk crosses the southern rim toward the Lalitpur hills, a quieter outing through farming villages and one of the valley's better sunrise viewpoints. Because none of these trails enter a national park, you can walk them freely without a permit, and most are well used enough to follow without a guide — though a local company adds route knowledge on the longer crossings and saves you working out transport home.

Good to know

  • Season: October–April for dry trails and views; autumn is best. Skip the monsoon.
  • Permits: None required on the rim — these trails lie outside the national parks.
  • Difficulty: Mostly moderate half-day walks; the Kirtipur and Bhardeu crossings are longer.
  • Combine: Many walkers pair a hike with the Pharping monasteries, Dakshinkali temple or a night in a Chitlang homestay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hike on the western rim of the Kathmandu Valley?+

Champadevi (2,278 m) is the classic. You can reach its forested summit from Hattiban, Dollu or the Pharping side in a half-day, with prayer flags, a small shrine and Himalayan views on a clear morning. Chandragiri, reachable on foot or by cable car, is the other headline summit on this side of the valley.

Do you need a permit or guide for these valley rim hikes?+

No permit is needed for the western and southern rim trails — they sit outside the national parks. A guide is optional; the main ridges are well used, but paths braid through forest, so a map or local company helps on the Bhardeu and Macchegaun routes. Start early to beat afternoon cloud.

When is the best time to walk the Kathmandu Valley rim?+

October to April brings dry trails and the clearest Himalayan views, with autumn (October–November) the finest window. Spring adds rhododendron colour in the higher forest. Avoid the June–September monsoon, when paths turn slick and the mountains hide behind cloud.

How do I get to the trailheads from Kathmandu?+

Most trailheads — Pharping, Hattiban, Dollu, Macchegaun, Kirtipur and Bhardeu — are 45 to 90 minutes from central Kathmandu by taxi or local bus on the valley's south and west edges. Agree a return fare or fix a pickup point, as transport back can be sparse.
