Pharping to Hattiban Hike

A short forest walk from the Pharping monasteries up to the wooded Hattiban hillside south of the valley.

The Pharping to Hattiban hike is a short, easy forest walk linking the Buddhist pilgrimage town of Pharping with the wooded Hattiban hillside above it, on the southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. At 1 to 2 hours one way, it is a gentle outing in its own right and the natural first leg of the longer climb up to Champadevi.

The route

From Pharping, trails rise through pine and broadleaf forest onto the Hattiban hillside, following old paths once used by pilgrims and woodcutters. The grade is gentle and the way is shaded, making it a pleasant walk even on a warm day. Strong walkers carry on from Hattiban straight up the ridge to the Champadevi summit, turning the morning into a full half-day on the rim.

What you'll see

Pharping itself is worth time before you walk: it is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the valley, with the Asura Cave linked to Guru Rinpoche, the self-arisen Tara image, the Vajrayogini temple and a scatter of monasteries on the hillside. Just below town is the Dakshinkali temple, a busy Hindu shrine. The Hattiban forest itself is quiet and birdy, and home to the valley's best rock-climbing crag.

Good to know

  • Time: 1–2 hours one way; longer if you continue to Champadevi.
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate on forest trail.
  • Season: October–April for dry, clear conditions; the forest is slick in the monsoon.
  • Combine: Pair with the Pharping monasteries and Dakshinkali temple for a full day out.

Getting there

Pharping lies about 45–60 minutes south of central Kathmandu by taxi or local bus. Agree a return fare or fix a pickup, as afternoon transport can be sparse. Because the walk itself is short, most visitors fold it into a fuller Pharping day — time in the monasteries and the Asura Cave in the morning, the forest stroll up to Hattiban around midday, and the option to push on toward the Champadevi ridge if energy allows.

This walk is one of the western and southern valley rim hikes and slots neatly into the bigger picture of day hikes near Kathmandu. To push higher, link it with the Hattiban to Champadevi ridge or the gentler Dollu to Champadevi approach. The whole area sits within easy reach of the Kathmandu hub.
