The Jumla to Rara Trek

The classic multi-day walk-in to Rara Lake from Jumla, over forested passes through remote far-western Karnali.

The Jumla to Rara trek is the classic, most rewarding way to reach Rara Lake: a multi-day walk through the remote forests and ridge-top villages of far-western Karnali, beginning in the high town of Jumla. Allow roughly three to five days each way, climbing over forested passes of 3,400–3,700m between Jumla (around 2,500m) and the lake (around 3,000m). It is moderate in altitude but genuinely remote, and the long approach on foot is half the appeal — easing you into the landscape that flying straight to Talcha skips entirely.

Why walk in from Jumla

Jumla is the gateway to the whole region: a high valley town famous for its red rice and apple orchards, reached by flight from Nepalgunj or the long overland Karnali Highway to Jumla. Starting here, rather than flying to the lake, lets you acclimatise gradually and travel through country almost no foreign visitors see — terraced fields, pine and birch forest, and tiny Khas villages where life follows a centuries-old rhythm.

The route

From Jumla the trail climbs out of the valley and over a series of forested ridges and passes, dropping through villages and high pasture before reaching the southern shore of Rara Lake. Many trekkers route via the historic Sinja Valley, the medieval Khasa Malla capital, adding a day but rich reward in history. A popular plan is to walk in from Jumla and fly out from Talcha, near Gamgadhi, so you never repeat ground.

At the lake

Once at Rara, link the approach with the lakeside Rara Lake trek and circuit and the climbs to the Murma Top and Chuchemara Danda viewpoints. The whole walk sits inside Rara National Park, so a national park entry fee applies and the pine forests reward patient wildlife watching.

Good to know

  • Self-sufficiency: Facilities are basic. Carry warm layers, cash, and a buffer of spare days for weather-dependent flights at both ends.
  • Acclimatise: Although moderate, the passes sit above 3,400m — read altitude sickness in Nepal and walk at a steady pace.
  • Plan the trip: See the general Nepal trekking guide and the wider Rara region and the Karnali collection to build a fuller far-western itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Jumla to Rara trek?+

The walk from Jumla to Rara Lake usually takes about three to five days each way, depending on the exact route and how far jeep roads have advanced. Many trekkers walk in from Jumla and fly out from the nearby Talcha airstrip, or vice versa, to avoid repeating the route.

How high does the Jumla to Rara trek go?+

The route crosses forested ridges and passes of roughly 3,400 to 3,700m between Jumla, at about 2,500m, and Rara Lake at around 3,000m. It is a moderate trek by altitude, but the remoteness, cold and basic facilities make it more demanding than the elevation alone suggests.

Do you need a guide for the Jumla to Rara trek?+

A local guide or porter is strongly recommended. The far west is remote, trails are lightly used and signage is minimal, while a guide eases navigation, language and the national park formalities. Most trekkers arrange one in Jumla or through an operator before arriving.

When is the best time to trek from Jumla to Rara?+

Autumn (September to November) and spring (April to May) are best, with settled weather and clear mountain views. Winter is cold with snow on the passes, and the monsoon brings leeches, slippery trails and unreliable flights to Jumla and Talcha.
